HRDI, located at 33 E 114th St, Chicago, IL 60628, is a community behavioral health center dedicated to providing comprehensive prevention, intervention, and treatment services for mental health, substance use, and community health concerns. Established in 1974 by Dr. C. Vincent Bakeman and Doris M. Lomax, HRDI was founded to address the lack of culturally appropriate treatment options on Chicago’s South Side. In December 2017, HRDI merged with Friend Family Health Center, becoming a subsidiary, and rebranded as Friend Health in May 2019.
HRDI offers nearly two dozen distinct programs across fifteen locations, focusing on enhancing individuals’ quality of life through self-sufficiency and substance-free living. Core services include community crisis support, treatment planning, comprehensive assessments, outpatient mental health and substance use services, targeted case management, and outpatient primary care screening and monitoring. Specialized programs cater to veterans, providing community-based mental health care, and offer peer and family support, as well as psychiatric rehabilitation services.
For those requiring more intensive care, HRDI provides 24-hour residential treatment for men and women struggling with alcohol and drug misuse. The women’s program accommodates pregnant and parenting women, allowing up to 10 dependent children aged 0-4 to stay with their mothers. Additionally, HRDI offers supervised residential placements for individuals facing mental health challenges, with separate facilities for men and women. Placement in these programs requires participation in an HRDI program and is subject to availability.
HRDI’s leadership team comprises experienced professionals committed to delivering high-quality care. Executive Director Eugene Humphrey has been with HRDI since December 2020, bringing a wealth of experience from his previous roles, including Director of Physician Services at the University of Chicago Medicine. Vice President of Clinical Strategies, Deborah Parnell, has been with HRDI since 2010 and holds a Master of Science in Healthcare Administration. Other key leaders include Antoine Marion, Director of Substance Use, Prevention & Recovery; LaToya Tanniehill, Director of Mental Health and Wellbeing; Terri Gandy, Director of Prevention & Support Services; and Stacey Seals, Director of Crisis and Community Intervention Services.
