The Extension, located in Marietta, Georgia, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping homeless men and women recover from substance use disorders through long-term residential treatment. Originally established in 1987 as the Marietta-Cobb Winter Shelter, it has since evolved into a comprehensive recovery program that addresses both addiction and homelessness.
The organization operates two separate residential campuses: an 80-bed facility for men and a 24-bed facility for women. Residents typically stay for nine to twelve months, engaging in structured treatment services, including group therapy, individual counseling, educational programs, and life skills training. The program is designed to help individuals not only achieve sobriety but also build the stability and skills needed for long-term success.
To qualify for admission, applicants must be at least 25 years old, have a diagnosable substance use disorder, meet the federal definition of homelessness, and be medically stable. Additionally, they must be willing and able to work full-time and plan to stay in Cobb County after completing the program.
Under the leadership of Executive Director Tyler M. Driver, who has been with The Extension since 1995, the organization has grown significantly. In August 2023, the men’s campus underwent a major expansion, adding 52 new beds along with improved facilities, including a commercial-grade kitchen, a fitness center, and multipurpose classrooms.
With its structured approach and strong community support, The Extension continues to provide a pathway to recovery and independence for those in need, offering a fresh start to individuals who are ready to rebuild their lives.
