Murphy-Harpst Children’s Centers, located at 740 Fletcher Street in Cedartown, Georgia, has been a sanctuary for the state’s most vulnerable children since its establishment in 1924. Founded by Ethel Harpst, the center began as a mission to care for children orphaned by diseases like typhoid, tuberculosis, and influenza. Over the decades, it has evolved into a comprehensive care facility, merging with the Sarah Murphy Home to expand its reach and services.
Nestled on a 160-acre campus in the foothills of Northwest Georgia, Murphy-Harpst offers a serene environment where children who have endured severe trauma and neglect can find hope and healing. The center provides holistic care for approximately 75 residents, including young adults up to age 21 who choose to stay beyond 18. Services encompass education, recreation, and therapy, addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.
A cornerstone of the campus is York Academy, a COGNIA-accredited on-site school staffed by Georgia-certified educators. This institution ensures that residents receive quality education, with transferable credits and opportunities to attend community schools as they progress. Beyond academics, the center offers diverse therapeutic programs, including equine-assisted psychotherapy, which utilizes horses to foster behavioral, emotional, and spiritual growth.
Recognizing the importance of spiritual development, Murphy-Harpst provides a nurturing environment where children feel safe to express themselves and explore their faith. The Transitional Living Program further supports young adults aged 18 to 21, equipping them with essential life skills as they prepare for independent living.
In addition to on-campus services, the center’s Evolve Initiative extends its standard of care to smaller, family-style homes across Georgia. Each Evolve Home accommodates four children, aiming to transition them to lower levels of care, foster families, or kinship placements within 9 to 12 months.
